SAN ANTONIO POLICE DEPARTMENT
VEHICLE FLEET

INTRODUCTION

The San Antonio Police Department utilizes a large and diverse fleet of vehicles in providing police services to the residents of the city. The management and maintenance of this fleet comes under three offices:

FLEET MANAGEMENT, BICYCLE PATROL, and the HELICOPTER DETAIL.

FLEET MANAGEMENT

Of the three offices, the FLEET MANAGEMENT DETAIL has the largest job, with responsibility for over 460 marked patrol cars, and nearly 250 unmarked cars, vans and trucks used by SAPD. Fleet Management, under the direction of a sergeant, is within the Resource Management Section of the Office of the Chief of Police.


Marked Patrol Cars

Marked Patrol Cruisers : Patrol & Traffic Divisions. Most SAPD marked patrol cars are Ford Crown Victorias (special "Police Package") from 1998-2000. There are also a few 1993-95 Chevrolet Caprices still in the marked fleet. All patrol vehicles are equipped with on-board computers (MDTs, or "mobile data terminals"), pictured at right.

NEW PATROL CAR MARKINGS :

SAPD introduced new patrol car markings in March, 1999 (see photos below). New vehicles added to the fleet will feature this new set of markings.

Traffic Section Vehicles

In addition to marked patrol cars, the Traffic Section utilizes 22 Police Motorcycles : Honda 1200 cc Goldwings.

Evidence Unit Vehicles

Evidence Detectives and Uniformed Evidence
Technicians utilize specially-equipped Ford Explorers
as Evidence Vehicles.(SAPD presently has 16 such vehicles.)

Specialized Vehicles : Crisis Negotiators' Van

The Crisis Negotiators' Van is
equipped with on-board phones,
computers and other equipment
useful in responding to crisis
or hostage situations.

BICYCLES & BICYCLE PATROLS

The Downtown Foot & Bike Patrol
and the Neighborhood Bike Patrols
(SAFFE officers and patrol officers on bicycles)
together have over 180 "mountain bike" bicycles.

"Blue Eagle" Helicopters (3 units).
The Helicopter Detail has two new
Schweitzer 330SP helicopters,
plus a third helicopter, a McDonnell Douglas Model 500C.
