SPECIAL OPERATIONS UNIT (SOU)

The Special Operations Unit, under the command of Captain James Flavin, assisted by Lt. Mark Christian, is divided into four details consisting of highly trained uniformed officers who respond to all violent incidents, detect and apprehend wanted persons, and augment the efforts of the Patrol Division. Details within SOU include Crisis Negotiators, SWAT, K-9, and Bomb Squad.

CRISIS NEGOTIATORS
The Crisis Negotiators Detail has the responsibility of responding to all critical incidents in order to maximize the prospect of resolving the situation, providing crisis management education and training to the public and private sectors, and augmenting the patrol efforts of the Special Operations Unit.

van During critical incidents the Crisis Negotiators utilize a van (left) specially outfitted with telephones, computers and other equipment to facilitate effective response and negotiations.
CRISIS NEGOTIATION CLASSES
San Antonio Police Department Crisis Negotiators conduct periodic training schools in Crisis Negotiation skills.

SWAT DETAIL
swat The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Detail works on directed patrol projects as normal deployment, but also responds to all critical incidents.

SWAT officers use special equipment and weapons during dynamic entries or other critical incident responses, including the special helmet and rifle, shown LEFT.

SWAT TRAINING CLASSES
San Antonio Police Department SWAT Detail conducts periodic training schools.

BOMB SQUAD
The Bomb Squad has the responsibility for rendering safe, transporting, and disposing of bombs, explosives, and hazardous devices. There are also two Bomb Canines and two handlers assigned to the Bomb Squad.


K-9 DETAIL
k-9 The K-9 Detail consists of 13 canines and 7 human handlers (6 police officers and 1 sergeant). Six canines are Narcotics Canines, six are Patrol Canines, and one is a Search and Rescue Canine.
