CRIME DETECTION SECTION

SAPD patch

The Crime Detection Section, commanded by Captain Gary Smith, has administrative responsibilities for units that investigate Property, Vehicle Theft, Vice and Narcotics offenses, identify, target, and arrest Repeat Offenders, and provide Electronic Surveillance support.

The Crime Detection Section is divided into four units:

  • Narcotics Unit, directed by Lt. Aldolfo Zuniga
  • Vice Unit, directed by Lt. Michael Gorhum
  • Vehicle Crimes Unit, directed by Lt. Michael Ritchey
  • Repeat Offenders Unit (ROP), directed by Lt. Carthel Williams

  • The Vice Unit operates a special "NUISANCE ABATEMENT DETAIL" (SNAP) that utilizes state nuisance abatement laws to target and bring into compliance properties that are used for prostitution, gambling, narcotics delivery or similar violations.

    VEHICLE CRIMES UNIT:
The Vehicle Crimes Unit, which also includes REACT (the Regional Auto Crimes Team, which has participants from SAPD, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the National Insurance Crime Bureau), investigates all auto theft activities. REACT focuses on all vehicle theft, including organized vehicle theft and chop shops, and also provides information on auto-theft-prevention.

The Vehicle Crimes Unit office is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. REACT may be reached by calling (210) 207-7345. If you have information concerning vehicle theft or chop shops and wish to call after hours, you may leave a message on the telephone voice-mail and a detective will call you back during business hours. If you need direct assistance you should call the SAPD at (210) 207-7484, and an officer will respond to your request.

REACT has introduced a new auto-theft deterrent program, called HEAT, or Help End Auto Theft, a state-wide program that is administered by the Texas Department of Public Safety together with SAPD. The Vehicle Crimes Unit is available to do 30-minute "Auto Theft Prevention" programs, free of charge, to neighborhood meetings, clubs, associations, or any other group that is interested. The presentation focuses on "Things You Can Do To Keep Your Vehicle From Being Stolen." HEAT registrations can also be done at the presentation. For more information or to request a presentation, please call (210) 207-2340.
