David Newman is the Assistant Director for the City of San Antonio's Solid Waste Management Department. The Solid Waste Management Department employs 482 individuals and has a budget of approximately $89 million. Mr. Newman is responsible for several functional areas, including recycling and garbage collection activities for the northeast and southeast service areas, environmental operations (landfill maintenance, household hazardous waste, brush recycling), and citywide brush and bulky item collections. Additionally, Mr. Newman is responsible for departmental personnel issues and solid waste equipment maintenance. Mr. Newman started with the City of San Antonio as the Environmental Services Manager in 1997. As Manager, Mr. Newman and his staff managed all of the city’s environmental issues, including landfill maintenance, the household hazardous waste program, environmental assessments and cleanups, air quality planning, and brush recycling. Two of Mr. Newman’s most memorable accomplishments as Environmental Services Manager include the conversion of an environmentally-contaminated site into a beautiful and safe city park and the development of protocol to review and address environmental issues for all city capital projects. Mr. Newman was promoted to Interim Assistant Director in 2008 and then to Assistant Director in 2009. Prior to joining the City of San Antonio, Mr. Newman was an Environmental Scientist with a Houston-based engineering and environmental firm. Later, Mr. Newman became a Project Manager/Site Superintendent for a San Antonio-based industrial construction company focusing on environmental construction projects across the nation. Mr. Newman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from West Texas State University and a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Mr. Newman is a licensed Professional Sanitarian, licensed Underground Storage Tank Remover/Installer, and also holds a Class A Commercial Drivers License. Mr. Newman, and his wife, Paige, share their home with their two loveable dogs (Gracie and Tallulah Belle) and a cantankerous cat named Herb. In their spare time, the Newman’s enjoy bird watching, gardening, and a little exercise mixed in for fun. |
