The Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) proudly serves City of San Antonio Solid Waste customers by providing them with a myriad of programs and services that effectively and efficiently manage municipal solid waste generated within the City of San Antonio.
Programs and services include automated garbage collection, automated single-stream recycling collection, residential brush collection, residential bulky-item collection, and dead animal pick-up. In addition to providing customers with reliable solid waste collection, SWMD operates drop-off and processing sites for brush and household hazardous waste. Additionally, SWMD manages and maintains the City’s closed landfills in compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
SWMD serves approximately 340,000 households, employs 482 individuals, and has a budget of over $90 million for the 2012 Fiscal Year. SWMD operates four district centers located around the City, various closed landfills, and administrative offices.

SWMD continuously strives to enhance its current programs and develop innovative waste management practices in order to make certain that environmentally sound and sustainable solid waste management operations are put to practice. Through our curbside recycling program, brush recycling centers, household hazardous waste facilities and SWMD supported recycling initiatives, such as the multifamily recycling ordinance, a positive environmental impact is made everyday that benefits San Antonio residents and future generations.
