The City
of San Antonio's Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program has a permanent HHW Drop-Off Center (DOC) located at
7030 Culebra Road. This service provides an environmentally safe means for citizens to dispose of items such
as paint, pesticides, oil, anti-freeze, batteries and household cleansers. If thrown in the regular trash,
these items could potentially harm the solid waste collectors. Most of these materials are recyclable. Therefore,
disposal in the regular garbage is not preferred. Pouring oil and others HHW onto the ground is also not an appropriate
disposal method. This pollution can effect streams, lakes, wildlife, and possibly even our
drinking water. Please dispose of your hazardous household waste properly by
bringing it to the HHW DOC. "Take it to the DOC!" (See link below for details).
All collected HHW materials are handled and packaged for disposal by technically trained
personnel. Following collection, the transport of all materials is performed
by a licensed hazardous materials transporter. The method of disposal depends upon
the type of material. Approximately 80% of all materials collected through the City
of San Antonio HHW Program are recycled. Materials that cannot be recycled are disposed of
by a licensed hazardous materials treatment, storage and disposal facility.
