Frequently Asked Questions Automated Collection

What if all my trash does not fit in the 96-gallon cart?

The 96-gallon cart is the equivalent of three regular 32-gallon trash cans. The average household sets about three trash cans per week. Hold any trash that does not fit into the cart on the first collection day to the second day of collection.

What if my cart is lost or stolen?

The cart is the property of the City of San Antonio. Please report any stolen cart to 311. (A police report must be filed before a new cart can be issued)

What if my cart is damaged?

The City will repair minor damage from normal use. Any cart with major damages as the result of abuse (i.e. hot ashes or coals) or neglect of the property owner will be replaced at a charge of $ 50.

How do I know which cart belongs to me?

Every cart will have a decal on the inside of the lid for your address. When the cart is issued, verify that your name & address is on the decal; do not  write anywhere else on the container, as it is City property. The City retains records of cart deliveries.

What happens to the cart if I move?

The cart is City property Do not   take the cart with you when you move, it is assigned to the specific address. (Please call 311 to arrange for the cart to be picked up. The new resident will need to call for a cart delivery.)

What do I do with my grass clipping and leaves?

The City recommends helping preserve our environment by Grasscycling, either mulching the grass or leaves into the yard or by participating in backyard composting. Mulching the yard waste and leaving in the yard saves money on fertilizer and on water use. If you feel you must throw away your grass and leaves, they must be bagged and fit inside the 96-gallon cart, or utilize our 12 ways to get rid of trash.

Will the 96-gallons cart be too big for my garage?

The cart's design is 47.5" tall, 35" deep (front to back), and 27" across. The base of the cart (footprint) is slightly larger than a regular 32-gallon trash can, so it should fit where you store your cans now. Many people choose to store their cart along side their house out of public view behind a fence, or in the garage.

What if the cart is too big for me to roll to the curb?

The carts are constructed and balanced so that most people can easily move a full cart to the curb. If you have physical limitations prohibiting the use of this cart, please call 311 and ESD Departmental representative will contact you.
