Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower/St. Therese
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower is the first National Shrine dedicated to Saint Thérèse de Lisieux of the Child Jesus, and bearing her nickname, "The Little Flower" of Jesus. Constructed during the Great Depression, the Basilica stands as a monument to the great faith of devotees of St. Thérèse from throughout world. The church is one of four in Texas distinguished for bearing the designation of “minor basilica.” The Basilica is a treasury of art, architecture, craftsmanship, and relics. It “highlights the missionary work of the Carmelite Friars and the faith development of the Westside of San Antonio.” The church celebrates and hosts different events for followers as well as the community, such as El Dia de los Ninos, La Grand Posada, St. Therese Gala, and others.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church
Founded in 1911, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is dedicated to the patron mother of Mexico. The church’s purpose is “to know, to love, and to serve Jesus to build a community of believers, to begin first in our own families, to speak and act for the victims of injustice, and to evangelize our culture and to respect the dignity in our people.” During his visit to San Antonio, Pope John Paul II visited Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish and held a mass celebration on September 13, 1987 across from the church at Plaza Guadalupe.
Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel
Founded by the Sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence, the original founders of Our Lady of the Lake University, the groundbreaking for the Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel took place in 1921 and the first mass was celebrated in late-1923. The spire reaches 193 feet and was the tallest structure in San Antonio until 1929 when the Smith-Young Tower was completed. In 1996, a full restoration of the Chapel took place at a cost of $2.8 million. During the school year, masses are held at 7 p.m. on Sundays.
