SAN ANTONIO (November 4, 2019) - In recognition of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 3rd-9th, Animal Care Services is encouraging residents to recognize the invaluable role animal shelters play in the community. ACS offer a variety of programs to assist pets and people alike including: FREE and low cost services including hosted vaccination and microchip clinics, spay/neuter opportunities, a robust placement program, educational events as well as performing animal control and investigations for the City of San Antonio. The shelter at 4710 State Highway 151 also reunites lost pets with their owners and helps ensure public safety by acting as the rabies control authority for Bexar County. The public can help the animals at ACS in a variety of ways:

  • Practice compassionate, humane pet care. Every day.
  • Donate monetary gifts to sponsor adoptions, help cruelly treated animals recover or even fund spay/neuter surgeries. Residents interested in donating to ACS can do so through the City’s secure portal here:
  • Host a donation drive for newspaper, bedding and gently used pet gear. ACS’s wish list can be found on Amazon at:
  • Volunteer your time. Walk a dog. Brush a cat. Volunteers can find out more by emailing
  • Foster a litter of puppies or help another pet in need. Get more info at
  • Report animal cruelty and neglect in the City of San Antonio to 311.
  • Adopt a pet at Animal Care Services…or with any of San Antonio’s many wonderful shelters or rescue organizations.

National Shelter Appreciation Week is typically marked the first full week of November.
