Animal Care Services shatters lifesaving records in FY12
Strategic partnerships help ACS end fiscal year with historic live release rate

For the first time in the shelter’s 60 plus years, Animal Care Services has set a lifesaving record with an overall live release rate of 62% for the fiscal year. The record includes more than 11 thousand animals sent to rescue partners since October 1st of last year as well as 6,087 ACS adoptions. The department also brought in more than 34 thousand animals from October 2011 to September 2012. During this same time period, citations for irresponsible pet owners increased to 5,681 and the ACS veterinary clinic completed more than 11 thousand spay/neuter surgeries--another departmental record. The successes come on the heels of a department wide commitment to the strategic priorities outlined in the Animal Care Services Strategic Plan. The shelter’s road map for increasing placements, enhancing enforcement and encouraging spay/neuter called for a live release rate of 38% for the fiscal year with a baseline goal of 70% live release by 2015. The shelter’s current lifesaving rate puts ACS ahead of that goal but in order to continue the momentum and push the no kill goal even higher, would be pet owners are encouraged to adopt from a local shelter or rescue. ACS is open for adoptions seven days a week at 4710 State Highway 151.
