San Antonio (Aug. 10, 2017) –Today, City Council approved the acceptance of a grant to build a new KaBOOM! playscape at Rosedale Park in Council District 5. This will be the eighth KaBOOM! playground built in San Antonio and is an exciting addition to the existing skate plaza, soccer fields, basketball court and fitness stations currently at Rosedale Park.
“Rosedale Park is a popular park in District 5 that serves thousands of residents and children,” said Councilwoman Gonzales. “The new playscape will give families the opportunity to play outdoors and help children develop their thinking skills and physical abilities. Of course, in their eyes, they’re just having fun.”
KaBOOM! is the national non-profit that works to bring balanced and active play into the daily lives of all children, particularly those growing up in poverty in America. KaBOOM! selects sites based on a number of factors such as vicinity, neighborhood engagement and community partnerships.
The grant engages partners with the City to fund and build the playground projects. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio is the community partner for this project and will assist with volunteer recruitment and other aspects of the playground build. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas is the corporate sponsor for this playscape at Rosedale Park.
“Outdoor play allows children to use their creativity, imagination and keeps them healthy both physically and mentally, said Xavier Urrutia, San Antonio Parks and Recreation Director. “We’re grateful to our partners for enhancing Rosedale Park with a new playscape where children will enjoy it for many years to come.”
In the last seven years, the Parks and Recreation Department has been successful with KaBOOM! to install playgrounds at West End Park; Martinez Park; Sgt. Matthew Mendoza, USMC Park; Stinson Park; Jim Mattox Park; Brooks Park; Jane Dubel Park and Labor Street Park.
A KaBOOM! Design Day is scheduled for August 30, 2017 where the community will be engaged on the aesthetics of the playscape. The playground is scheduled to be built on November 4, 2017. District 5 residents interested in participating can visit SAParksandRec.com for more details.
