San Antonio (August 10, 2017) – The Carver announced its 2017-2018 Performance Season before its subscribers and patrons. The season is packed with its signature blend of multicultural and multidisciplinary performances. Features include a tribute to Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone and Abbey Lincoln; two of Philadelphia’s trademark dance companies; a Cuban-born, multi-instrumentalist and the return of the Little Carver Intimate Series. Included as part of season is the Carver’s new look with its historically appropriate Art Deco façade and an upgraded streetscape featuring state-of-the-art LED illumination.

TU Dance, led by Alvin Ailey veterans Toni Pierce-Sands and Uri Sands, embodies a contemporary vision striving to reveal the connective power of dance. This Minnesota based company is a leading voice for contemporary dance and is critically acclaimed for its diverse and versatile artists.

Regina Belle emerged as a prolific, consistently engaging vocalist on the urban contemporary scene in the mid 1980’s. Since then, Belle has garnered fans worldwide with her stunning vocal prowess. Her tenth studio album, The Day Life Began, released last year further solidified her place as one the great vocalists of our time.

Javier Colon, a musical genius possesses a wonderful range and a talent for wrapping his bright voice around a tune. Mr. Colon joined NBC's talent show, The Voice in 2011, where he quickly became a crowd and judge favorite and later went on to win the competition. Colon later went on to release a widely acclaimed album on Universal Republic Records, entitled Come Through for You.
The 2017-2018 Season welcomes the return of the Little Carver Intimate Series. These 4 performances feature some of San Antonio’s finest artists.
EL CORAZON DEL BOLERO

Billed as a tribute to male and female bolero composers from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico, El Corazón del Bolero touches all aspects of amor and pledges of eternal love, bitter disappointment and unrequited love. Written and performed by José Rubén De León and accompanied by pianist, Dr. Aaron Ellington Prado and George Prado on bass, the trio breathes new life into the bolero.

San Antonio’s premier smooth jazz artist BillyRay Sheppard, has been shaking up the city and filling the streets with beautiful music since the 80's. His musical roots run deep with earliest experiences in Blues, R & B, Reggae, Latin, Tejano and Country bands. His love for music has kept him grounded and his love for jazz keeps him performing. Billy Ray will fill the Little Carver with his soulful saxophone.
THE BAD MAMA JAMA MIX TAPE

The Bad Mama Jama Mixtape: A Woman’s Soundtrack for Life premieres at The Little Carver on Saturday, March 24th. This theatrical production features an impressive line-up all female spoken word artists sharing poems and monologues about womanhood. Each poem will be inspired by a popular song centered on women’s issues ranging from love to empowerment.

International recording and award-winning percussionist Henry Brun, “Mr. Ritmo” is one of the most talented musicians and band leaders. His latest production, “the Afro Caribbean Dream Project”, highlights the use of the vibraphone, merging the instrument with intoxicating rhythms from the Caribbean, Central and South America, while utilizing African percussion and electronica.
