SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 7, 2017) —  Since the beginning of her tenure, Councilwoman Gonzales has championed an affordability discount program with SAWS to provide low income families reductions to their water bills. Due to the proposed SAWS rate increases, which were approved today by the City Council, she appealed to SAWS to redouble affordability and customer service outreach by consolidating services and programs under newly structured Affordability Care Teams (ACT) for each City Council office.

“My primary responsibility is to make sure there is no burden to rate payers within low income brackets, but I also understand we need to continue to support the long-term sustainability of our city’s water system,” said Councilwoman Gonzales, "I applaud SAWS for responding to concerns by agreeing to heighten affordability and outreach efforts with the assistance of a dedicated ACT representative for each council office."

SAWS will efficiently support the newly dedicated care teams, which will provide outreach efforts to identify and qualify low income rate payers, who are at a 50% poverty level. Monthly bill discounts of up to an estimated $24 will help alleviate some of the financial burden that eligible low income San Antonio residents may experience with rate increases. Affordability Care Teams representatives will also provide customers with the educational tools they need to help them conserve water to reduce monthly water bills.
