SAN ANTONIO (April 5, 2018) — Mayor Ron Nirenberg presented a congratulatory citation to the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee (SALOC) for the 2018 NCAA Men's Final Four, led by Executive Director, Jenny Carnes, at Thursday’s City Council meeting.
San Antonio hosted the 2018 NCAA Men's Final Four from March 30 through April 2, after receiving the bid award in November of 2014. The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee consists of San Antonio Sports, the City of San Antonio, Visit San Antonio and UTSA, the event's host institution.
An estimated 93,000 out of town visitors were welcomed in San Antonio for the Final Four, and the event garnered an estimated $185 million direct visitor spending economic impact. The Alamodome, which received $60 million in improvements, hosted about 70,000 people on each night of competition. More than 145,000 people attended the March Madness Music Festival at Hemisfair over three days, headlined by Imagine Dragons and Maroon 5.
“I am immensely proud of the way our city came together to host the best Final Four ever”, said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “This effort was led by Jenny Carnes and her staff at the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee, and they deserve tremendous praise for highlighting our city on the national stage in such a stellar way.”
In addition to the work of the SALOC, SAPD, SAFD and law enforcement partners from regional and federal agencies worked on a very sophisticated security plan with the NCAA for more than a year, and were prepared for every eventuality. More than 3,000 San Antonians shared their time and talent as Final Four volunteers, providing support to the SALOC staff and the NCAA.
