District 4 City Councilman Rey Saldaña and the City Council approved today the City’s annual operating and capital budget for fiscal year 2014.
Councilman Saldaña is extremely pleased to announce that as part of the budget, $3.7 million has been allocated to Port San Antonio for key strategic infrastructure improvement projects. These improvements are critical to the continued success of Port San Antonio and will help to maintain and attract new economic development and jobs to the region.
"The time to compete for aerospace jobs is now. These funds solidify that we are committed to a future that includes high quality good paying jobs,” said Councilman Saldaña. San Antonio will not be left behind, and the former Kelly Air Force Base has much more life to give to this city and its hard-working residents. When the Port announces the relocation of thousands of jobs and the growth of existing companies, it will be because of the investment made by this Mayor and Council.”
These funds will be used to upgrade portions of Billy Mitchell Boulevard, Dunton Street, General McMullen Drive, General Hudnell Drive, Thompson Place and Frank Luke Road. The streets were part of the former Kelly Air Force Base and the Port has maintained them since the base’s closure in 2001. The funding will enable the City to upgrade them to municipal standards and formally accept their transfer and conduct future maintenance.
“Councilman Saldaña and the City are great partners as we work to create new opportunities for growing important industries at the Port,” said Bruce E. Miller, Port San Antonio’s President and CEO. “The upcoming support for road improvements enhances Port infrastructure to better serve our customers in aerospace and other sectors now and into the future.”
The project is especially important as activity grows on the 1,900-acre property. There are already 13,000 workers who commute to the Port every day and work for more than 80 employers in the private and government sectors, creating significant car and truck traffic.
