District 4 City Councilman Rey Saldaña will be participating in the unveiling and dedication of the District’s newest addition, the South San Walking Trail, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, from 1 to 3 p.m. The trail, located at the corner of New Laredo Highway and Kelsey Avenue, is the direct result of input received from Councilman Saldaña from area residents requesting green space and other amenities for their landlocked neighborhood.
Working in partnership with the City’s Parks & Recreation Department, the San Antonio Fire Department, and the Keep South San Proud Association, Councilman Saldaña was able to facilitate the transformation of a previously unused empty lot adjacent to Fire Station # 25 into a nicely-landscaped and heavily-used walking trail. As part of the transformation, the students from the South San High School Interact Club planted more than 30 trees at the space last spring.
To commemorate the South San Walking Trail dedication, the Keep South San Association organized a memorial brick sale that resulted in the purchase of more than 150 commemorative bricks that were used in the landscaping along the walking trail. Many of the bricks were purchased in memory of loved ones, to signify an anniversary, or to mark other significant milestones in their lives. Because it received such an overwhelmingly positive response from the community, the group plans to begin a second phase to the memorial brick program soon.
