The City of San Antonio’s Department of Planning and Community Development and District 2 Councilwoman Ivy R. Taylor will host an informational event on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 for the public to learn more about revitalization efforts planned for the Iowa Street Corridor, just east of the city’s downtown in District 2. Residents are especially encouraged to attend to learn how they can become more actively involved in the revitalization process of this nine-block corridor by utilizing City services, programs and resources. The free informational event will be held at the Davis-Scott Family YMCA, 1213 Iowa St., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
As part of the Department of Planning and Community Development’s overall reinvestment strategy for various parts of the city, and with the help of several partners, the “Nine Block Renaissance” along Iowa St. will include infrastructure improvements, home improvement and repairs, a new bus shelter and bus stops, park improvements and others implemented in three phases over the next several months.
“The Iowa Street Corridor improvements are the first of several Reinvestment Strategies the City will undertake this fiscal year. The ‘Nine Block Renaissance’ is an excellent opportunity for residents to become directly engaged in the process,” said John Dugan, Director, Department of Planning and Community Development. “The goal of a Reinvestment Strategy is to eliminate duplicative revitalization efforts, fill in funding gaps, and better serve those communities and areas with the most need.”
As a component of the City’s Strategic Plan for Community Development, the Strategic Reinvestment Initiative is intended to provide comprehensive services within a targeted neighborhood, district or corridor within the City of San Antonio. It is an inter-departmental collaborative that seeks to transform distressed areas within the City of San Antonio into ones of opportunity. Among many benefits, reinvestment strategies are designed to sustain and increase owner-occupancy, strengthen property values, and improve the physical appearance and quality of life of neighborhoods and neighborhood commercial corridors.
