Cruz on the Issues: Short-term Rentals (STRs)

Here in District 2, many of our residents become STR hosts as a way to support their families, make ends meet, and to offset rising property taxes.

It is important to be mindful of property rights when looking to enact regulations on what individuals do with their home, however preserving quality of life standards is the main goal so the issues of late night parties, traffic, and unwanted extra guests are necessary to keep consideration of when looking at this ordinance.

If you have ever used Airbnb or Home Away, you’ll see that the sites themselves self-regulate when it comes to guests that may not utilize . Every time a guest stays at an STR, the owner gets to “rate” them. This allows for checks and balances when it comes to the issue of the types of visitors that come to our neighborhoods.

It is important that as we discuss regulations, we take a close look at what enforcement would look like as we need to continue to be mindful of property rights.

Sincerely,
