DSD academy

We recognize the importance of industry-related certifications and continuing education for professionals in our industry. That is why we make professional development an essential part of our business. Our Training Manager works closely with various professionals in the industry to offer educational training support for our staff as well our customers/community. Our training programs focus on those seeking to extend their knowledge base, continuing education and certification.

Partnering with our community to build and maintain a safer San Antonio is a mission that we take seriously and are always looking for new and innovative ways in which to accomplish our goals. As part of our efforts to increase and improve our partnership with our community, we’ve started a DSD Academy to help residents understand the various aspects of development, including zoning, platting, permits, inspections, code enforcement and graffiti. DSD Academy will have a session every month, each on a different topic. 

DSD Academy is held from 9  to 11 a.m. in the Boardroom inside the Cliff Morton Development & Business Services Center located at 1901 S. Alamo St.

Introduction to New Search Tool for City Registered Contractors

Development Services Department organizes several San Antonio Building Codes Academy (SABCA) sessions per year with the goal of bringing high-quality educators and necessary building-related codes training for code officials, design professionals, builders, tradesmen and building owners and managers.

New SABCA Training

Topic: 2018 IBC and IFC Fire Protection Systems
Dates: August 27 or 28, 2019
Location: Hardberger Park Urban Ecology Center
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This seminar is designed to guide participants through the 2018 IFC requirements related to Fire Protection Systems (Chapter 9). These requirements include suppression systems, standpipe systems, automatic fire alarm systems, automatic detection systems, and additional fire protection assemblies. The course is designed for code officials, design professionals, and those who want to learn more about the Chapter 9 fire protection system requirements in the 2018 IFC and 2018 IBC.

Cancellation Policy

Request for registration cancellation prior to 4:30 p.m., Aug. 23, 2019, will receive a full refund. Cancellation request received after this date are subject to a $50 cancellation fee.

Development Services hosts Lunch Time Learning opportunities where Subject Matter Experts provide training and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for internal staff and our customers once or twice a month. A wide variety of topics are offered for professional development, as well as to inform our customers of any new or revised development processes.

The sessions are usually offered from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. so participants can participate during their lunch time. Examples of training sessions we have offered in the past include:

  • Professional Practice Update: Ethics (Texas Board of Professional Engineers)

  • Fire-Rated Wall Material


Development Services hosts training opportunities for Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for internal staff and our customers. A wide variety of topics are offered for professional development, as well as to inform our customers of any new or revised development processes.
