3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Give Pets as Gifts

It's fun to surprise someone with a cute pet as a gift during the holidays, but being a pet parent is a huge commitment. Consider this before making the big decision!

 

  1. Time
    It takes a lot of time to keep a pet healthy and well-cared for. Consider whether the person receiving the pet will have time to walk, train, groom, and play with them. Also remember taking the time for yearly checkups, shots, and preventatives at the vet!


  1. Money
    Pets eat up a lot of your money - literally! Think about if the person receiving the pet has the financial means to afford food, toys, beds, a collar and leash, kennels, litter and litter box, grooming materials and veterinary bills. 


  1. Love
    Pets, just like humans, need lots of love and attention. Will the person receiving the pet love theme for the rest of the pet's life? Many "Christmas gift pets" end up in shelters or rehomed as soon as their owners get bored or realize what a big responsibility they are.
