Record Number of Potholes Eradicated

CONTACT: Joe Conger, (210) 710-3445

SAN ANTONIO, TX (September 30, 2019) - The San Antonio Pothole Patrol reached another milestone today by fixing a record 100,000+ potholes in Fiscal Year 2019*, while challenging residents to report more of them, using 3-1-1 or through the SA311 app on their smart phone.

“Our crews take a proactive approach and scour the city’s streets for potholes,” said Paul Berry, Transportation & Capital Improvements (TCI) spokesman. “That effort, combined with our residents calling 311 or using the app to report potholes helped push us to a new level of service to San Antonio,” Berry added. “We can’t do it without the continued support of our watchful citizens.”

Residents made more than 15,000 calls to the city’s 311 hotline to report potholes this year, making up roughly 15% of the total potholes TCI repaired.

Crews quickly made repairs to the 100,017th pothole in the 5000 block of Fairford Drive Monday morning. The repair typically costs about $35.00 and takes about 20 minutes to fix. The San Antonio Pothole Patrol is managed by TCI’s Streets Division.

Berry said, “San Antonio’s weather extremes make our streets prone to potholes. And, we’ve just set the bar for the Pothole Patrol so much higher for next year.”

Some additional Pothole Patrol Facts:
TCI’s 16 Pothole Patrol crews fixed approximately 380 potholes each day. San Antonio’s extremely hot weather, followed by bouts of rain, causes the expansion and contraction of asphalt and creates the perfect conditions for water to seep into the asphalt and create the pothole.
