Since the Eastside Reinvestment summits in 2010, we have accomplished the following:

  • The $29.75 million Choice Neighborhood Grant, managed by the San Antonio Housing Authority, redeveloped the Wheatley Courts public housing complex into a 414-unit mixed income development
  • The $23.7 million Promise Neighborhood grant, managed by the United Way, implemented a STEM strategic plan, extensive teacher training, and curriculum development support in SAISD schools
  • Increased the Sam Houston High school graduation rate from 51% in 2010 to 80% in 2017
  • Increased kinder-readiness in EastPoint from 31% in 2010 to 44% in 2016
  • Opened the 13,000 square foot Dr. Robert Hilliard Medical Clinic
  • $17 million in additional federal grant funds were brought directly into the Promise Zone through Promise Zone preference points
  • $100+ million in additional City investments to improve streets, sidewalks, drainage, parks and other facilities
  • $240+ million in new private residential and commercial investments, including Alamo Beer, Cherry Modern, the Baldwin, and many others
  • 97 store front improvement grants provided to businesses by SAGE since 2009
  • Opened first Starbucks on the Eastside, a sign of the improved business climate
  • Opened Bibliotech East as part of the East Meadows complex to improve access to technology and digital literacy
  • Decreased unemployment from 11.2% in 2011 to 9.8% in 2016
  • Increased the median household income by $2,000 since 2011 (from $26,583 to $28,400)
  • Added over 1,200 jobs to the Promise Zone since 2014
  • 20% decrease in property crimes (compared to >1% decrease citywide) since 2014
  • 68% increase in code enforcement cases as part of the City’s proactive effort to decrease blight
  • Opened a one-stop workforce training center, the Eastside Education and Training Center, in partnership with Alamo Colleges to provide job training opportunities in high demand occupations
  • Graduated 300+ residents from job training programs
  • Launched a second chance pilot program in partnership with Chrysalis Ministries to provide job training opportunities to ex-offenders
  • Graduated 105 residents from the Neighborhood Leadership Academy
