retiring from the city

When you are ready to retire from the City of San Antonio, there are a few things that you will want to do to get the process started:

  1. Call the Texas Municipal Retirement System or TMRS at 1.800.924.8677 to request your personalized retirement estimate. Remember, to be eligible to retire your TMRS account, you need to have five (5) years of service at age 60 or 20 years of service at any age.
  2. Call Human Resources Customer Service at 210.207.8705 to schedule your retirement appointment.
  3. Provide your department with your retirement date. This should be done in writing, and you should plan to give at least two weeks' notice.
  4. Contact the Social Security Administration at to find out when you are eligible to apply for Social Security retirement benefits.
  5. Reach out to your ICMA-RC or Nationwide Retirement Solutions representative if you contribute to one of the City's 457 (Deferred Compensation) plans.

Deferred Compensation (457) Programs

The City of San Antonio provides employees an additional way to put even more money toward retirement directly from their paycheck through a Section 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The plan is designed to be a supplement to the City’s mandatory retirement plan and is an additional way to invest long-term. 

Nationwide Retirement Solutions and ICMA Retirement Corporation are the City’s deferred compensation providers. Contact Human Resources Customer Service at 210.207.8705 for more information. 

More About Deferred Compensation

  • Contribution limits are set yearly by the Internal Revenue Service. 
    • The minimum contribution for deferred compensation is $10 per pay period. 
    • The maximum contribution for 2021 is $19,500. 
    • Employees age 50 and over may contribute an additional $6,500. For these employees, the maximum contribution for 2021 is $26,000. 
  • There are 26 payroll deductions for deferred compensation per calendar year. 
  • An employee may stop the payroll deductions at anytime by contacting the retirement plan provider or Human Resources Customer Service.

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS)

The City of San Antonio offers a mandatory retirement plan to its full-time,civilian employees upon their date of hire. This retirement plan is administered by the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS). 

  • Employees contribute 6% of their bi-weekly salary to the plan.
  • The City contributes two (2) times the employee contribution (12%) after the employee becomes vested.
  • Employees become vested after five (5) years of service.
  • Criteria for retirement: Five (5) years of service at age 60, or 20 years of service at any age.
