SAN ANTONIO (May 22, 2017) – The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) has confirmed a case of tuberculosis (TB) in an individual at Page Middle School in the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD).
The individual is off campus, in stable condition and will not return to school until no longer infectious.
A meeting and presentation on TB was held today with school staff and faculty. Also today the school sent letters to all parents, who are invited to attend a bilingual TB presentation on Thu. May 25, at 5:30 p.m. inside the school auditorium.
Metro Health and SAISD are working together to identify those individuals at the school who may have been exposed. Letters will be sent to those that may have been potentially exposed.
Parents or staff with clinical questions about TB should call the Metro Health TB Chest Clinic at 210-207-8823.
TB is an infection caused by microbe that typically affects the lungs. Information from the American Pulmonary Association states: “It is not easy to contract an infection of tuberculosis.” Usually, a person must have close contact with the infected person for a substantial length of time. Casual and limited contact with a person with active TB is not enough for someone to pass it on to others. TB infection and disease can be cured with medication.
