Councilwoman Sandoval’s Statements on Risk Mitigation Policy

CONTACT: Matteo Treviño, 210-323-2835

SAN ANTONIO (March 21, 2019) — City Council approved a Risk Mitigation Policy to provide residents with housing relocation assistance and emergency housing assistance funding. Councilwoman Sandoval issued the following statement:

“Losing a longtime home or apartment is often tragic enough, but displacement also affects one’s relationships, economic opportunity, and health. You get an eviction notice, you lose your home—but you may also lose your job if new home isn’t near a bus stop, for example, or you lose the support you once enjoyed from your neighbors. That’s why the Risk Mitigation Policy matters.”

“San Antonio is experiencing exponential growth, but we have to take steps to ensure that growth doesn’t come at the expense of our vulnerable residents. The Risk Mitigation Policy marks a step toward ensuring that public action doesn’t create public harm.”

“Whether you’re elderly and can’t keep your home up to code or you live next to a new development that’s driving up your rent, we want to do everything we can to keep you in your home.”

“I want to extend my thanks to City staff and the community members who came together to craft this policy.”
