SAN ANTONIO (April 22, 2019) – For the 33rd consecutive month – more than 2 ½ years – San Antonio International Airport has set a passenger growth record for the month of March.

A total of 907,349 passengers flew through the airport, the highest of any month of March on record, representing an increase of 7% from the same month last year.  This achievement is particularly noteworthy, as it exceeds the passenger numbers from March 2018 when San Antonio played host to the NCAA Men’s Final Four, which brought tens of thousands of fans and media from across the country.

“This growth directly reflects the ongoing trend of progress at the airport to support and to drive prosperity for our city and the surrounding communities.  The Aviation Department team continues to attain additional air service and new routes, increase capacity, and enhance our customer experience,” said Russ Handy, Aviation Director.  “These record breaking achievements are telling indicators of our flourishing and diverse economy here in San Antonio.”

Domestic travel saw 869,625 passengers, an increase of 6.8% from March of 2018, which was in line with a capacity growth of 7.9%, indicating supply is matched by passenger demand.

A significant achievement was the 37,724 international travelers in the month of March, a noteworthy 12.1% increase, which actually exceeded a capacity increase of 7%.

Additionally, a total of 23,429,086 pounds of air cargo moved through SAT in March, exceeding levels that have not been reached in the month of March since 2008.

The U.S. Census Bureau ranks the San Antonio – New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) fifth in the nation in growth since 2010.  In recent years, SAT has welcomed multiple new flights which have contributed to the recent passenger growth, including exceeding 9 million passengers for the first time in 2017, then eclipsing 10 million passengers a year later in 2018.

The Aviation Department has launched Phase II of the Strategic Development Plan, which will bring changes to the airport to stay ahead of projected passenger demand through the year 2040 and beyond.  “We have an aggressive strategy to grow our airport and to stay well ahead of our current and projected growth,” said Handy. “Our strategy will not only transform the airport, it will help to transform the City of San Antonio.”
