SAN ANTONIO (May 23, 2019) – I’m overjoyed that the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs’ Governing Board gave a green light today to move forward on the Alazan Lofts housing project. This is the first step in the redevelopment of the Alazan-Apache Courts, one of the oldest public housing projects in the nation. Today’s vote will allow us to build a new housing development across from the Alazan-Apache public housing location so we can move residents from existing substandard public housing into new housing with modern amenities such as clothes dryers, A/C and WiFi. Once residents are moved, the rehab of existing housing units can begin providing a decent quality of life for our most vulnerable residents. Poverty doesn’t mean people should live in substandard housing.
