SAN ANTONIO (May 29, 2019) –The City Council was briefed today on the 2019 Status of Women report. The report comes at the urging of Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales who believes that before work can be done to address gender disparities in San Antonio we must first have a baseline knowledge of the present situation.
The councilwoman released this statement:
As of today we know for a fact what we intuitively knew all along, the status of women in San Antonio is distressfully deficient. We also know now that in order to fix the problem a tremendous amount of work lies ahead; we know that we should concentrate our efforts on several fronts - health & wellbeing, economic well-being, political participation, violence and safety; we see that the first step must be taken in our coming budget discussions; and we know that we can only accomplish this task with the entire community's backing.
I’m encouraged that this initial status report gives us a clear blueprint for action, and I’m eager to begin the work that will bring equity to all the women of our city and a better future for all the girls who are watching as we move forward.
