Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales’ statement regarding Lila Cockrell

CONTACT: Victor Landa, 210-884-3429

SAN ANTONIO (August 29, 2019) – Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales issued the following statement regarding the passing of former Mayor Lila Cockrell:

It is with great sadness and deep appreciation that we mourn the loss of Mayor Lila Cockrell. She was a trailblazer and a visionary in a time of change when our city needed it the most.

As the first woman Mayor of our city and the first female Chair of the CPS Energy Board of Directors she opened the door of possibilities to many of us who have followed her lead in public service. Her warm and congenial demeanor belied a tough negotiator and that example still resonates in City Hall.

During her time as mayor she guided San Antonio through a challenging transition that led to a more culturally inclusive power structure. The work she started continues to this day.

She will be missed.
