Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales’ statement on the establishment of Indigenous People’s Day

CONTACT: Victor Landa, 210-884-3429

SAN ANTONIO (October 3, 2019) –“Today’s City Council resolution which establishes October 11 as Indigenous People’s Day is a needed first step in what will hopefully become the inclusion of indigenous history in our schools’ curriculum and help to establish a civic space where that history is recognized and respected. Our city is a majority Mexican-American community, and that reality carries the fact that most Mexican-Americans are in part ethnically indigenous. Indigenous People’s Day is a confirmation of our identity, of our collective history and of our future.”
