Councilwoman Sandoval’s Statement on the Revisions to the Sick & Safe Time Ordinance

SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 3, 2019) — City Council voted to approve the revisions to the Sick and Safe Time Ordinance (formerly the Paid Sick Leave Ordinance). Councilwoman Sandoval issued the following statement:

“As the daughter of working parents, I recognize Sick and Safe Time for what it is: a transformative policy—one that puts San Antonio on track to stop making headlines for its poverty and economic segregation and start making them for its prosperity and friendliness to families.”

“Today is more than a step forward for workers, but for victims of domestic violence, who can take the time they need to deal with a harrowing situation, and for families, who will not run the risk of economic instability every time a family member gets the flu.”

“Yet this ordinance benefits no one as much as it does the child who no longer feels guilt and shame telling her parents she doesn’t feel so good. Now, she can rest knowing their parents don’t have to choose between paying the rent and paying attention to her needs.”

“I thank all those who participated in bringing forward the ordinance, its amendments, and their many comments, including employees, health professionals, and employers.”
