SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 15, 2019) – Get ready, get set, and go! Please join us for the first ever coalition of the Baby Buggy Walk + Safe Sleep Run, tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 16 at Miller’s Pond Park located at 6175 Old Pearsall Road, San Antonio, Texas 78242 at 8 a.m.

The 7th Annual 2019 Baby Buggy Walk and Health Expo is a FREE event to bring awareness to infant mortality and pregnancy loss, and is an event that is held nationally each year. Strollers welcome! There will be a special race for the little ones, the Toddler Trot, and a Remembrance Ceremony and Procession.

The Safe Sleep 5K Run/Walk, formerly Rex’s Run, is in memory of Rex Neal Van de Putte who died when he was five months old of Sudden Death Syndrome (SIDS). His family has held Rex’s Run for the past five years to raise funds that go to the Southwest SIDS Research Institute whose mission is to end unexpected infant death through education, support, medical services and research. Participants will enjoy a 5k Run or Walk around Miller’s Park Pond and there will be awards for age group winners and prizes for the Top Fundraising Team and Individual.

This event is brought to you by Metro Health’s Healthy Families Network (HFN), San Antonio Healthy Start (SAHS), Southwest SIDS Research Institute (SWSIDS) and Baby Education for South Texas (B.E.S.T) who have collaborated to host the Baby Buggy Walk + Safe Sleep Run in the Park/5K in an effort to engage the community around safe sleep practices in a fun, healthy and active way.

The event will feature a health expo, health screenings and educational materials will be available to those attending regarding the topics of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and accidental suffocation/co-sleeping. Plus, plenty of fun and entertainment for the little ones with a KIDS ZONE! Strollers and leashed Pets are welcome!

"Our goal is to spread the word that planning for a healthy baby begins long before the parents see her baby's face for the very first time," said Kori Eberle, Program Manager for Metro Health’s Healthy Start program. "Early and continuous prenatal care, healthy eating, physical activity, a healthy lifestyle, and family and community support are all crucial to ensuring that our youngest and most vulnerable have a healthy start in life."

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant, for which no cause can be identified. SIDS continues to be the leading cause of death for infants throughout the years of research. The leading cause of injury or death for these infants is the unintentional suffocation for children less than one year old in the United States and many of these deaths are linked to unsafe sleeping practices. Research has also documented a four fold increase in accidental suffocation/co-sleeping deaths since the 1980’s. You can help bring awareness and safe sleep environments for registering for the Run/Walk. To register, go to: https://www.athleteguild.com/running/san-antonio-tx/2019-baby-buggy-walk-safe-sleep-run

Proceeds obtained from 5K registrations and sponsorships will be used to purchase safe sleep environments (pack-n-plays) for at-risk Bexar County residents. Both SWSIDS and B.E.S.T. are registered 510(c)-3 organizations.

Metro Health’s Healthy Start program seeks to reduce infant mortality in Bexar County with free home visiting services and community education in the most affected areas. Healthy Start launched the Healthy Families Network coalition of community partners in Dec. 2011 to address infant mortality through several initiatives including awareness events like the Baby Buggy Walk.
