San Antonio (December 20, 2019) – San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is ready for the peak Holiday travel season with 400,000 passengers expected to travel through the airport over Christmas and New Years. November passenger statistics continue to reflect the strong demand for air service at SAT for international travelers while the numbers dropped slightly for domestic travel. The busy season is the perfect time to debut the Spurs Fan Shop and some holiday tunes.

Holiday Block Leave
Thousands of military men and women are scheduled to depart SAT this week, heading home for the holidays. They are on leave from duty at Joint Base San Antonio to celebrate the holidays with friends and family. Volunteers from the Airport Police, the USO and local businesses will be at the airport to provide snacks, assist with directions, wrap gifts and hand out candy canes to the servicemen while they are waiting to board their flights.

International Traffic Continues its Upward Trend
A total of 854,152 passengers flew through the SAT during the month of November, representing a 3.9% decrease from the same period last year according to the latest industry report. This year, Thanksgiving weekend, one of the busiest travel periods of the year, was split between November and December, so most of the travel will be reflected in the December statistics. Despite the decrease in numbers, international travel continues to be in demand, growing by 6% in November, serving over 38,000 passengers. This was due to added capacity to Guadalajara on Interjet and seasonal increases by Aeromexico and Interjet to Mexico City. Southwest also added a flight to Cancun.

“This growth is impressive considering the current economic climate and is motivation for the air service team to continue its work with our partners in Mexico” said Russ Handy, Aviation Director for the City of San Antonio.

Domestically, air traffic decreased 4.3% or a total of 815,516 passengers compared to the same month last year. Additionally, a total of 21,514,490 pounds of air cargo moved through SAT during the month. This is a 7.4% cargo decrease compared to November 2018 with year-to-date totals up 2.1%. The cargo decrease can be attributed to the shift of Cyber Monday to December.

Holiday Music Puts Travelers in a Festive Mood
Holiday song and cheer played this year during the 29th Annual Holiday Music Festival presented by SAT Live. The festival featured 50 performances by area school bands, choirs, orchestras and church choirs. They entertained travelers with a bit of traditional, contemporary and local renditions of holiday songs. This year’s event highlighted the talent of our local jazz, mariachi and traditional singers and musicians. SAT Live will showcase artists throughout the year playing music in both Terminals A and B.

Spurs Store Makes its Debut at SAT
Sports fans will be excited when traveling through San Antonio because the Spurs, Sports and Entertainment opened a Spurs Fan Shop in Terminal A. The Spurs Fan Shop, located just to the right of TSA security checkpoint lane, is operated by Paradies Lagardere. The shop features official gear from the San Antonio Spurs, the San Antonio Rampage, and the San Antonio FC. The store will open daily from 6am to 10 pm. The store at SAT is the third location of the official team store, and the second site outside of the AT & T Center.
