SAN ANTONIO (May 13, 2021) – Adolescents, ages 12 to 15, are now eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine to help protect against COVID-19 after the CDC endorsed vaccination on May 12 for this age group.
Upon this recommendation, Metro Health will offer the Pfizer vaccine to adolescents beginning Friday, May 14 at the Alamodome. Consent from a parent or legal guardian is required for 12- to 15-year-olds to be vaccinated, said Dr. Anita Kurian, Assistant Director of Metro Health.
“We encourage parents to have their 12- to 15-year-olds get the Pfizer vaccine to help protect them against the coronavirus, especially as end of school approaches and adolescents will want to be among their friends and will be going on vacation with their families,” Dr. Kurian said. “Anything we can do to get more people, especially this age group, vaccinated will help bring us closer to ending the pandemic.”
Dr. Kurian added that a photo ID for adolescents is preferred but is not required.
As a reminder, people 12 and up can get vaccinated without an appointment at the Alamodome drive-through clinic from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It is important to note that only locations providing the Pfizer vaccine can administer it to 12- to 18-year-olds.
The official CDC recommendation came after the FDA on Monday authorized emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds to help end the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the CDC website. Read the CDC’s official statement here.
