Welcome to the Office of Historic Preservation

Office of Historic PreservationThe Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) protects the historical, cultural, architectural, and archaeological resources that make San Antonio unique.  Our office promotes preservation through the creation of local historic districts and local individual landmarks.  Along with the Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC), the OHP oversees a design review process for exterior alterations to historic landmarks and districts, properties within the RIO districts (spanning the San Antonio River), public properties, and public art to ensure that modifications and changes are appropriate for historic resources.  We coordinate with other City departments to comply with required environmental review processes to protect historic resources.

The OHP is also committed to historic preservation outreach and education.  We have established a Preservation Academy to host lectures, workshops, and events promoting historic preservation to the community.  We have offered Window Restoration Workshops, a Homeowner’s Fair, and many other activities to share information about caring for historic resources.

Our offices are located at the Development and Business Services Center at 1901 S. Alamo.  Explore our website to find out more about who we are and what we do!

Proposed Mission Protection Overlay Districts

Mission ConcepcionThe San Antonio Missions have been nominated as a World Heritage Site.  In order to protect these important community treasures, the City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation hosted a public kickoff meeting to discuss four proposed Mission Protection Overlay zoning districts. Follow the link below to view the presentation that was given at the kickoff meeting.

The proposed overlay districts would regulate building height within a 1,500-foot buffer area of Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Protecting the scenic quality of these sites is imperative to the success of the nomination. The proposed restrictions would address future multi-story buildings, structures and objects; single-story projects will not be impacted.

For more information, please contact Cory Edwards, Planner at (210) 207-1496 or cory.edwards@sanantonio.gov.

This is a free service provided to eligible property owners.

The most recent S.T.A.R. project took place in the Dignowity Hill Historic District during the weekends of March 29-30 and April 5-6, 2014.  Click on the link below for "before" and "after" pictures of the properties that received assistance.
