Assistant City Manager
Alejandra “Alex” Lopez was appointed Assistant City Manager for the City of San Antonio on March 22, 2021. Prior to joining the City Manager’s Office, she served in various executive leadership roles as Director and Deputy Director of Economic Development, and as the City’s Interim Chief Equity Officer. She oversees the Economic Development Department, Convention & Sports Facilities, and Pre-K for SA.
Alex has over fifteen years of service to the City of San Antonio. During her tenure, she has led key initiatives in Small Business, Workforce Development, Industry Development, and Global Engagement. She helped lead the redesign the City’s Small Business Economic Development Advocacy Program (SBEDA), which resulted in historical increases to City contracting with small, minority, and women-owned businesses. She also played a key role in the development of Launch SA, the City’s resource center for creators, entrepreneurs, and small business owners at the San Antonio Central Public Library.
During her interim assignment as Chief Equity Officer, Alex worked to advance equity in budgeting, community engagement, and program and service delivery. Her efforts resulted in the City’s recognition by the National Civic League as an All-America City and the International City/County Management Association. Throughout the years, she has also served in various departments supporting capital improvements, intergovernmental relations, and community services.
In addition to serving the City of San Antonio, Alex also served as the City of Austin’s Deputy Director of Economic Development. During her time in Austin, she engaged various community stakeholders and identified strategies to support Austin’s music industry, including the implementation of a program that extended live music venue hours. She also oversaw the implementation of corridor stabilization strategies to help businesses address affordability challenges, and managed catalytic and award-winning public-private partnerships -- including the Mueller and Seaholm redevelopments.
Most recently, Alex has provided oversight and administration of two pillars for Workforce Development and Small Business Support in the City’s COVID-19 Recovery & Resiliency Program. She manages a budget of over $100 million in funding for the City’s emergency response and has been instrumental in the development of the SA: Ready to Work program, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2020.
Alex earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. She is a graduate of the Alexander E. Briseño Leadership Development Program and the International City/County Management Association Leadership Development Program. In June 2014, she also completed the University of Virginia’s Senior Executive Institute, which focuses on developing high-performing public sector teams.
