SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 11, 2018) — Mayor Ron Nirenberg said today that City Council’s decision to allocate $200,000 for the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force was an important step forward in crafting new policies to ensure more affordable housing is available to San Antonio residents.

“I appreciate my colleagues’ support in this crucial effort,” said Mayor Nirenberg. “In particular, I want to thank Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran for the important role she played in securing the allocation from the San Antonio Housing Trust Public Facility Corporation.”

Nirenberg added, “Councilwoman Viagran is a strong advocate for affordable housing.”

The allocation will be used to fund both the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force meetings and community workshops and the development of the Task Force’s final report, expected later this summer. The comprehensive housing policy framework will include recommended policies to make affordable housing more accessible and ensure the city is prepared for continued population growth.

“Housing is one of the issues that is gripping every city in the nation and will define San Antonio’s future.  We are in a period of unprecedented growth that shows no signs of slowing down, and the pressures on San Antonio’s residents – especially our most vulnerable communities – will only continue to grow if we don’t take action,” said Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran.

“I’m proud to support the Task Force’s work,” she added.  “Making progress as a city takes all of us working together and doing our part wherever we can.”

City Council accepted the funds today and formally approved using the grant for the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force.

Councilwoman Viagran is chairwoman of the San Antonio Housing Trust Public Facility Corporation board and worked with Mayor Nirenberg to win the corporation board’s approval of the $200,000 allocation last month as well as the approval of Council.
