SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 6, 2019) — Three new San Antonio Housing Authority board members appointed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg are scheduled to be installed Thursday.

The development comes on the heels of City Council’s Jan. 17 approval of members nominated to the revamped Housing Commission. The Commission overhaul was recommended last year by the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force.

“We look forward to the enthusiasm that these newly appointed individuals will bring to the improvement and coordination of housing programs in our City, particularly the effort to increase affordable housing stock,” Mayor Nirenberg said.

The mayor added, “The task force’s recommendations are becoming reality on several fronts, and I am pleased with the progress toward ensuring accountability to the public.”

The new SAHA commissioners slated to take office on Thursday are Jo-Anne Kaplan, a former executive director of a housing nonprofit; Gabriel L. Lopez, a commercial construction professional; and Sofia A. Lopez, a national housing analyst.

They will be joining Chairman Morris A. Stribling, Charles Clack, Marie R. McClure and Jessica Weaver on the SAHA board.

Last month, City Council approved Mayor Nirenberg’s five nominees to be at-large members to the new Housing Commission. They include Lourdes Castro Ramírez, who was named Commission chair. She is the president University Health System Foundation, and she served as chair of the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force.

Other new at-large Commission members are Robert Abraham, a neighborhood activist; Dr. Paul Furkawa, a retired university lecturer with more than four decades of in social work experience; Jessica Guerrero, who has 20 years of experience in nonprofit organizations assisting vulnerable communities; and Marianne Kestenbaum, who has an MBA in Finance and vast experience with community service organizations.

The Commission includes Keith Hom, Deputy CEO of VIA Metropolitan Transit; David Nisivoccia, President and CEO of the San Antonio Housing Authority; Sarah Sanchez, Executive Vice President of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation; and John Kenney, Executive Director of the San Antonio Housing Trust.
