San Antonio (March 30, 2017) - The City of San Antonio has received the Park Design Excellence Award for Pearsall Park from the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS). The Society honors one park annually that displays a high degree of professional design quality and recreation usage which aligns in their vision of championing engaged communities, wellness lifestyles and greenspaces.

A successful project of the 2012 Bond Program, Pearsall Park was designed by Bender Wells Clark and features the City’s largest playground with two splash pads and skate park, outdoor traveling rings and one of the first in the nation to offer a forty-yard sprint timer.

“The community and I had a vision to transform the former landfill to a destination park that benefits District 4 residents and the entire City,” said City Councilman Rey Saldaña. “Over 5,000 residents attended the grand opening last June; this number supports that residents wanted a park that offers unique one-of-a-kind amenities to enjoy.”

Additional improvements to Pearsall Park include two basketball courts, zip-line, and shade canopies that complement existing amenities such as disc golf course, dog park, and Leon Creek Greenway trails.

“Since the grand opening, Pearsall Park has welcomed many residents and visitors to recreate for free and connect with neighbors,” said Xavier Urrutia, Parks and Recreation Director. “I want to thank Councilman Saldaña, the consultants, and the Transportation & Capital Improvements and Parks & Recreation staff who worked on the project; this prestigious award is a true representation of teamwork and brought the community’s vision to life.”
