SAN ANTONIO (October 10, 2017) - Starting October 12th and going through January 2018, seven community workshops and five free community events are scheduled to solicit feedback from park users and stakeholders regarding their vision of their parks.

The SA Parks System Plan is the guiding principal for future planning decisions on the expansion, capital improvements, and programming of the more than 240 City-owned parks and recreational facilities, 15,000 plus acres of green space, and over 181 miles of trails. The plan is updated every 10 years, with the last plan being adopted in 2006.

“Parks are about people and places. Our goal is to offer people the opportunities and resources to connect with family and friends, enjoy the outdoors and improve quality of life,” said Xavier Urrutia, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department.

The current effort to update the plan will leverage the work of and coordinate closely with the SA Tomorrow plan initiative and include an Urban Forestry Strategic Plan. The Bender Wells Clark Design Team (BWCD Team) will assist during the approximate 18 month long process.

“We welcome the community to our workshops and events,” Urrutia added.

The workshops are more formal and will allow participants to review the plans and provide feedback. Spanish translation service is available at all workshops. The community events are fun; family oriented and offer those attending a chance to complete the bilingual survey.

The first workshop is Thursday, October 12th, 5:30 p.m. at the Central Library. Events kick off with a weekend of Movies in the Park. Monsters University will show at Harlandale Park. Friday night will be in English followed Saturday night with the Spanish version of the movie. Both events start at 7 p.m. and include a costume contest. The movie will start at dusk.

More information, including the survey (both in English and Spanish) and the complete schedule of workshops and events can be found on SA

Feedback may also be provided via email (
