NOW HIRING LIFEGUARDS. JOIN THE PARKS AND RECREATION TEAM
It’s a dream job with great pay for excellent swimmers who love working with people. The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department is hiring more than 200 lifeguards to serve the public at municipal swimming pools. The starting pay is $10 an hour. The department is making the hiring process easier by hosting several lifeguard clinics to help local teens, college students, and adults 16 and over apply for these positions.
The introduction clinics will be held on the following Saturdays: Jan. 30, Feb. 13, March 5, April 2 and 16, and May 14 and 21, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., at the San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.
At the event, applicants can learn more about becoming a lifeguard and meet current lifeguards. Applicants will have access to a computer to complete the on-line application and they are encouraged to take the required prerequisite skills test.
To complete the test, applicants should bring their swimsuits and be prepared to swim 300 yards freestyle and breaststroke, tread water without using their arms for two minutes, as well as retrieve a 10-pound weight from the 13 foot depth and swim across the pool within the allotted time. Practice time and instruction will be available. The skills test can also be scheduled for a later date.
The department provides Red Cross certification training to prepare applicants for their lifeguarding responsibilities. Applicants who have passed the prerequisite test will be scheduled for training classes.

San Antonio Natatorium History
The San Antonio Natatorium was built in June of 1981 on the old Sidney Lanier High School Track. City Council member Henry Cisneros was instrumental in working with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) in developing the concept. At the time, the $3.2 million facility was the flagship for the City of San Antonio and South Texas. The venue has provided numerous high school, international and local age-group competitions. The Olympic team from Australia trained at the natatorium in December 2000. Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman, Bruce Hayes, Grant Hackett and Karen Perkins have graced the water of the San Antonio Natatorium.
Built with federal grant funds, it was geared toward allowing inner city children an opportunity to develop and compete in competitive swimming and diving. the facility has produced an Olympic trial qualifier, numerous UIL state qualifiers (swimming and diving), regional champions, and has served thousands of SAISD swimmers and divers.
