Charles B. Shannon Memorial Baseball Stadium

In recognition of his invaluable service to the community, the San Antonio City Council voted in 2015 to name the baseball field at Pittman-Sullivan Park for Charles B. Shannon. An avid baseball fan, Mr. Shannon coached an adult team from 1974 to 1988. He served as executive director of the Alamo Branch YMCA from 1982 to 2001 when he was promoted to district director over the Southern Region, which included Davis-Scott, Southwestern Bell and the Westside YMCA’s. During his career with the YMCA, Shannon raised more than $5 million to provide programming opportunities for inner city youth. He further set the example for public service as a U.S. Navy veteran who did a tour of duty in Vietnam. Mr. Shannon died unexpectedly in 2003 at age 55.

First Lieutenant Edward B. Sullivan

First Lieutenant Edward B. Sullivan (1898-1918) was the son of James and Agnes Sullivan.  The family was living in Gainesville, Texas when Edward was born.  James Sullivan was a liquor dealer by profession.  He died by 1910 and his widow and family moved to San Antonio where they lived for many years at 1529 North New Braunfels Avenue.  Edward Sullivan joined the United States Army air service to become a pilot in World War I.  He was killed on July 7, 1918 during a training flight in Ardmore, Oklahoma.  Sullivan was buried in Gainesville’s Fairview Cemetery.

Dewey Pittman

Dewey Pittman (1898-1918) was born in Texas and lived with his family on their farm at Sayers near San Antonio by 1900.   The family moved to Wyoming by 1910, where Dewey’s father H.M. Pittman homesteaded.  They returned to San Antonio by 1912.  Mr. Pittman became a jail guard and a policeman and Dewey worked in a hardware store and as a delivery boy for a shoe company.  They lived at various addresses including 1945 East Commerce Street from about 1915 until 1917. Dewey Pittman enlisted in the United States military in 1917 and became a Marine. He went to France in October 1917 and was killed at the battle of Soissons on July 19, 1918, just twelve days after the death of Edward Sullivan.  Pittman was first buried in France.  His body was disinterred and moved to the San Antonio National Cemetery in May 1921.
