Program success stories
Congrats to Joel Maldonado (Men’s Novice Flyweight -114 lb division) and Luis Carrasco (Men’s Open Lightweight – 132 lb division) who competing in the championship round of this year’s San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves Tournament the weekend of Feb. 21.
Although they did not advance, they represented the program well. Overall the San Fernando Boxing Club had 12 participants get matched up over the first five days of the tournament.
All of our boxers proudly represented both our department and our boxing program during the regional Golden Gloves.
- Luis Delgado (114 lb. Men’s Division) was awarded the bronze medal during the semi final round of the 2015 USA Boxing Elite National Championships in Spokane, Washington in early February.
- Jesse “Bam Rodriguez (101 lb. Men’s Division) won the U.S. Championships in
Reno, Nevada. He is part of the USA Boxing Team and will be competing in the
Junior World Championships in St. Petersburg, Russia (September 2-13, 2015).
- Joshua Franco won the silver medal at the 2015 USA Boxing “World Series of Boxing and World Team Trials” in Chattanooga, Tennessee this past December. He has been invited to participate in the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada (July 10-26, 2015).
He is currently ranked #2 in the country.
2014 Houston Open Ring Nationals, Aug. 29 - Sept. 1
Congratulations to Jason Limon, 13, who won a belt in the 90 pound open junior division.
Jason competed at the Legends Sports Complex in the Woodlands.
2014 Ringside World Championships, Aug. 2-3
Jesse Rodriguez won his championship bout at the Ringside World Championship in Independence, MO, on Aug. 3. Congratulations to Jesse, who competes in the Boys-13-14 Category, 91-95 pounds. Also winning his championship bout was Cresencio Ramos, who competed in the Men's Senior Open Division. Congratulations!
Tanajara to compete for Team USA
Featherweight Hector Tanajara Jr. has been invited by USA Boxing to participate in the Second Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, Aug. 16-18, 2014. Congratulations to Hector! He finished fourth in the 2014 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas.
2014 National USA Junior Olympics Tournament
Megan Martinez lost her first bout at the 2014 National Junior Olympics in Charleston, WV, the week of June 10-14, eliminating her from the tournament. Hats off to Megan for a strong effort in her representation of the region. She advanced to the national tournament after her win in the 119-pound weight division in the Region 8 Junior Olympics Boxing Tournament at Woodlawn Gym here in San Antonio Memorial Day weekend.
2014 National Golden Gloves Tournament
After making it through three bouts, San Fernando Boxing Club boxer Hector Tanajara fell 3-2 to Gary Antonio Russell of Washington, D.C. in the semi-finals of the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas on May 17. Congratulations to Hector for representing San Antonio so well. Previously, Hector beat Samuel Rodriguez of Buffalo, NY, 3-0 in a 123 bout. He also defeated Sharone Carter, Jr., of St. Louis, MO, and Julio Luna of Kansas City, MO, Bantam Division bout.
Joshua Franco was eliminated after a 3-2 loss to Leroy Davila of New Jersey at 108 pounds. Franco had previously defeated Thomas Huitt-Johnson of Kansas City in his first round bout. Franco competed in the Light Bantam Division (108). The tournament continues through May 17. Kudos to Joshua for representing San Antonio so well at the national level.
The two boxers advanced to nationals after emerging as champions from the Regional Golden Gloves competition held in Fort Worth in early March.

The State Tournament will be held in San Antonio at Woodlawn Gymnasium on May 23, 24, and 25. All winners from the Gulf, South Western, West Texas, and Border Associations will be in San Antonio to box for the State Championship Titles.
2014 State Golden Gloves
Two San Fernando Boxing Club boxers emerged as champions from the Regional Golden Gloves competition held in Fort Worth in early March. They are Hector Tanajara, champion in the Bantam weight division (123), and Joshua Franco, champion in the Light Bantam Weight Division (108). Both fighters will advance to the Golden Gloves National Tournament in Las Vegas, NV, May 12 - May 17. Best of luck!

The Joe Rubin Memorial Award Outstanding Boxer in the Open Division was awarded Hector Tanajara and Crescencio Ramos won the John "Rocky" Riojas Award. Congratulations to all the participants!
2014 Silver Gloves National Boxing Tournament
January 30 - February 1, 2014
Jesse Rodriguez, 14, won his division in the 85 pound weight class by winning two consecutive bouts the weekend of Feb. 1, 2014. Christian Romero competed as well, but was defeated in a single bout.
