SAN ANTONIO (May 4, 2018) — “On the question of whether San Antonio should bid for the Republican National Convention, I am satisfied that my City Council colleagues and I considered all of the information at our disposal.
It was not a simple consideration. Most importantly, we should remember who we are.
San Antonio takes pride in its hospitality. We are a welcoming city that has cultivated a strong tourism industry, and we are a city that tells a story of cultural inclusion. Both of these things rely on our sense of history and both make us unique among the cities of the nation.
San Antonio is our home, and I believe the choice of whether to bring the RNC to our house tears at the fabric of who we are. Our pride in hospitality is part of our cultural heritage, and in the choice we faced, those two marks of our identity were at odds.”
