"From rain, to drain, to river."  This is the path that pollutants which we dump, drop and leave on the ground take as they enter San Antonio's natural waterways.

We may not get much rain in San Antonio, but every time we do, it hits the ground and turns into runoff.  Rainfall runoff picks up everything that's on the ground and carries it into our streets, ditches and storm drains, collectively known as our storm sewer.  But unlike waste water which is flushed down our toilet or kitchen sink and treated in our sanitary sewer, runoff which travels through our storm sewer is not treated or filtered for pollutants.  Instead, it empties directly into our natural creek and river channels, dumping all the pollutants it picked up off the ground as well.

Most runoff pollutants come from everyday things we use in our homes, in/on our vehicles, or on our lawns outdoors:

  • Household hazardous waste products (HHW) - house paint, furniture/appliance cleaners, polishers, solvents, etc.
  • Motor oil and automotive fluids
  • Lawn care products (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer)
  • Grass & leaf clippings
  • Pet poop

How we use, store and dispose of these can have a big impact on the water quality of our rivers and creeks.  We can each commit toward taking steps to reduce and prevent these pollutants from contaminating rainfall runoff and ultimately polluting our water.  Visit the following sections to find out more.
