The Health and Wellness Division provides medical physicals designed to provide early detection of serious medical conditions and encourage better health. The program has been modeled after the International Association of Fire Fighters/International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFF/IAFC) Wellness-Fitness Initiative and in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards 1582. It is the goal of the Wellness Program that employees of the SAFD remain healthy and productive throughout their careers and on into retirement.
To promote a healthy and fit workforce SAFD has a centrally located gym available to all employees. Additionally, cardio and weight equipment is provided to all stations. CrossFit classes are conducted daily.
To assist employees and their families with their emotional wellbeing, the Health & Wellness Division continued to provide several options. The Employee Assistance Program is provided by Deer Oaks and is designed to assist employees and their families with work and personal issues. Our staff Psychologist advised and participated in the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) Team, provided continual training and support for the Peer Support Program, and was also available to assist employees and their families with personal and professional issues. Our Peer Support and Chaplaincy Program provide employees with the opportunity to talk to a fellow employee or seek spiritual guidance.

Athletic Trainer - The SAFD Athletic Trainer recognizes the physical, mental and emotional demands as well as job requirements for firefighters. The utilization of an AT within the department has decreased healthcare costs and returned personnel back to duty quickly and safely.
