Officer Involved Shooting

On Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 5:15 p.m., SAPD Officers were dispatched to the Huebner Commons Shopping Center at Huebner and Vance Jackson for a report of an agitated woman, identified as 26 year old Hannah Westall, in the parking lot with a gun. The first officer to arrive on the scene was Sergeant David Perry, who is a 23-year-veteran of the department.  Sgt. Perry contacted Westall and gave her verbal commands to keep her hands where he could see them. Westall ignored the Sgt’s commands and reached behind her back and pulled out a gun from her waistband. Westall started to raise the gun and pointed it towards the Sergeant who pulled his duty weapon and fired several shots striking Westall multiple times.  Westall was pronounced deceased at the scene.

During the processing of the crime scene, and the collection of evidence, it was determined that the gun in Westall’s possession was a non-functional replica of a handheld submachine gun.  The replica is visually indistinguishable from a fully functional gun.

The investigation is on-going and no other information will be released at this time.
