SAN ANTONIO (August 7, 2020) - LULAC District 15 of San Antonio and the San Antonio Bexar County Complete Count Committee, in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau (Bureau), will host a neighborhood outreach car caravan on the east side of San Antonio.  City and county officials, along with community and civic organizations, will participate in the Census Car Caravan. The Bureau recently announced that all data collection would cease on September 30th, a month earlier than was scheduled. The car caravan will serve to raise awareness that the 2020 Census is happening now, and time is running out to participate.

Date: Saturday, August 8, 2020
Departure time: 10 a.m.
Staging of cars: Claude Black Community Center, 2805 East Commerce Street, 78203
Caravan route: the caravan will travel along S. Hackberry, North New Braunfels, and Martin Luther King Drive

The U.S. Census Bureau has begun knocking on doors in San Antonio to collect data from households that have not responded on their own. Census takers will wear masks and follow local public health guidelines when they visit each home.  If no one is home when the census taker visits, they will leave a notice of their visit with information on how to respond online or by phone or by mail.

LULAC wants everyone living in San Antonio to understand that the time to get counted is now.  Current data shows that households on the east side are lagging in self-response with some census tracts only having 42% self-response, which are lower than the City rate of 60% self-response. Overall in San Antonio, the Bureau will have to knock on more doors than it anticipated due to the lower than expected self-response rates to date.

As a trusted voice in the community LULAC is committed to ensuring a complete count by raising awareness that the census is safe, easy and important.  Although the Bureau has started collecting data door-to-door, there is still time to respond on your own from the safety of your home either online, by phone or by mailing back the paper form.
