Release No: 21-003

On January 13, 2021, San Antonio police detectives arrested and charged Officer Erik Rodriguez, a 14-year veteran, with Misuse of Official Information, a felony offense. During an investigation into allegations of dating violence, the detective on the case learned that the victim believed her abuser had a friend who was providing him with information about the ongoing investigation. The detective then investigated the victim’s allegation and discovered that the suspected abuser received case information from an SAPD officer. It was further discovered that the officer received compensation from the suspect for providing this information. The officer will be placed on Administrative Leave and the Bexar County DA has already been briefed on this case.

Please attribute the following statement to Chief McManus:

“Preventing family violence and providing services to victims has been and remains a priority for the San Antonio Police Department. I am bitterly disappointed and frustrated that an SAPD Officer would violate his oath of office and the public trust by placing a survivor in jeopardy. The quick response of the SAPD Detective assigned to this case reinforces that there will be swift and serious consequences for any type of misconduct. The investigation of the officer and the abuser will continue, and additional charges may be filed.”
