Councilwoman Viagran champions inclusive growth strategy to mitigate economic segregation in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (March 6, 2018) — District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca J. Viagran, Chair of the Economic and Workforce Development Committee, asked City staff to develop actionable policy recommendations that will bring stakeholders, community partners, local leaders and residents to the table. The Economic Development Department has identified the City of San Antonio’s tax abatement guidelines as a place to start making changes. Below is Councilwoman Viagran’s statement:

“San Antonio continues to be ranked as one of the most economically segregated cities in the United States. Two years ago, I began the process of reviewing City policies and their impact on underrepresented and vulnerable communities in our municipality.

Today’s actions are only the first steps. By developing an inclusive growth strategy and tying this initiative to SA Tomorrow, we can ensure our work on this matter endures. We can solve economic segregation, but only if everyone is willing to work together and do their part.”
